In the past, the idea of running Whistler every year has been raised. It
has been suggested that Whistler has the potential to grow onto the kind of
tournament Penticton has become. It took Penticton a number of years to
grow into what it is today. Whistler has experienced substantial
attendance growth over its first three tournaments. It is held in a
beautiful destination, at a world class hotel with affordable rates, and
has a variety of attractive dining alternatives. The possibility of
holding a regional there yearly is appealing to many tournament attendees,
and presumably the Fairmont Chateau Whistler would be open to it. D19
might be in a better position to negotiate favorable terms with the Chateau
if we were to run a regional there yearly.
During and following the most recent Whistler regional I conferred with
some of my fellow D19 board members, and with Matt Koltnow, about the idea
of going yearly at Whistler. These limited initial contacts did not
surface show stoppers concerning such a concept, but of course there would
need to be homework on related matters as well as consideration of our
integrated tournament plans. I’m attaching a brief thought paper that
notes some of the issues involved and two concepts that would include a
yearly Whistler regional. We presently have venue contracts going out
several years, so clearly this is not a change that could take place
overnight. Given the lead time involved with addressing, considering and
implementing such a potential change, I feel it would be helpful to get it
out before us again now, and to encourage its consideration, rather than
waiting until our next board meeting in Burnaby in April. As outlined in
Concept B in the attachment, our officials involved with Whistler,
Leavenworth and Burnaby venues might be the primary players in helping us
understand the advisably of such a change — or of a Concept C or Concept D.
I propose that this topic be included on our agenda for the board meeting
in Burnaby, but I would like to encourage expression of views, ideas,
concerns and suggestions in an interchange been now and that board meeting.
