OT: Tracer/routing question

Well, I guess I'm dumber than I thought.

Although I'm aware that many web sites can have sub-sites (e.g.
mysite.com and sub1.mysite.com), I hadn't considered that mysite.com
and www.mysite.com were not equivalent. Very often, if I watch the
browser's address bar, I see the browser substitute www.mysite.com
after first testing mysite.com. I wasn't aware that they could have
two distinctly different IP addresses. I'll need to ask which one they expect.

I've learned something today.

Regarding the baseline, how would I know the hops/hopcount for a site
unless, perhaps, it's my own site and I administer the routing tables?
