There's certainly nothing wrong with either of your choices, but my first 
choice for a server would be & is Debian. I run three Debian servers and 
maintain them all from the command line -- don't even have x-windows 
installed. Ubuntu is based upon Debian but, to my mind, adds too much eye-
candy -- fine for a desktop but not for a server.
