I run kubuntu   but after loading up that I switch to XFCE.  So I have most of 
the KDE utilities  (kmail, etc)  but don't have to deal with the fancy 
graphics.

I also do all maintenance from a command line with no problems.   Use apt-get, 
aptitude and synaptic  for installing and maintaining packages.  Works well.

Am also running several of the D525 boxes...  have had no problems  but none 
of them have wireless as yet.
