Sound Card Recommendations for Linux

Hi All,

I recently bought a new PC with embedded sound that was recognized as a
Realtek ALC887-VD and installs a snd-hda-intel ALSA module. The
snd-hda-intel module has some quirks.

I have Googled till I'm cross eyed but haven't yet discovered the
magical mix to get it to work crackle and feedback free. Especially
since I want to be able to Skype and use gtk-recordmydesktop with sound
input.

I'm thinking that maybe one day some one will get it right but it's
probably a few kernel upgrades/dist releases away.

Until then I would like your idea's on what sound cards are working in
your own setups. With the idea of maybe installing one on my box.

I have the following slots. With a graphics card taking up the PCIe 2.0
x 16 slot.

Expansion Slots 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x1
1 x PCI

So suggestions please.

Of course I will be able to investigate and figure this out myself using
the interwebs. But I had a hankering for a nostalgia post as much as to
ask this question.

PS. Hope you are all well.
