FWIW, if you stick with Ubuntu Dapper you get a (relatively) painless
introduction to the Debian world, and this is invaluable in and of
itself (IMO). Dapper is essentially Debian Testing plus -  tied to a
specific release point and with a few extras mixed in. It's very up to
date now, but it will be allowed to age a la most "enterprise"
releases whereas Debian Testing will continue to evolve as will the
next Ubuntu development project.

Everybody and his dog push RedHat, so it never hurts to learn how the
other half lives.
