1. In my experience, this is almost always the result of selecting the
wrong X mouse driver.

2. You should be able to get into another console with CTL-ALT-F1-6,
and there you can work with the xorg.conf, then kill X, and try again.
If using a gui login setup, you may need to login as a normal user,
then sudo wdm/kdm/gdm/etc.
