wild mouse

I've been trying to install various linux version but have had problems
with several. Last night I installed Libranet from an older CD I downloaded
(Libranet 2.7 classic). I got everything installed okay and used all the
default responses (e.g. probe for devices, auto config them, etc.).
When the system boots, it goes into the GUI (not sure which one) but the
mouse is erratic. Even small movements cause the pointer to fly around the
screen and random items get selected.
I assume the mouse driver or some configuration is incorrect. I can't
easily get into any configuration screens because of the erratic behavior
of the mouse.
Is there a way I can reset the mouse? I tried rebooting to see if it could
get rediscovered but that didn't help.
I'm using a Logitech optical wheel mouse, P/N: 830513-0000, Model M-BJ58.
Any suggestions from the experts out there? Aside from re-installing
everything?
Thanks,
~Rick
