When I've had this problem in the past, it was because of the "protocol" 
specified for the mouse in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Changing "protocol" 
from "IMPS/2" to "PS/2" should do it. Or perhaps vice-versa if I'm remembering 
wrong.
