Thanks for the suggestions, however this now appears to be a sample of Murphy's Law of Instrumentation: the instrumented system will not fail!!!
The behavior has now disappeared - printing from Konqueror, MozillaFirebird, OpenOffice, and 'cat xxx | lpr.' Multi-page documents print at normal speed, and it doesn't matter whether it's graphics stuff or plain text, color or greyscale.
All I can say is WTF!!!
OTOH, I just upgraded cups a few days ago to the .20 release, so ... I've known cups to be quite erratic from one release to the next. For a time (a year ago or more), alternate cups releases would not even work with my printers.
Often when you raise your hand in class to ask the teacher a question you know the answer before she gets to you <g>
