Well, I,m back after a bummer week. Got sick Sat. nite, Wife took to orspital, 75 miles one way @ 11 PM. Got home about 7AM Sunday. Slept thru Sunday. Started to snow Sunday nite. Tree fell across power line/telephone wire to house and snapped 2 poles. Still had telephone. No electricity. Whole west end of Siskiyou County was out. Look at http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/. I live in area 5, Happy Camp. Any way some advice. When the power to the house went out I thew the main breakers. When the telephone company lifted all the wires off the road and my drive way I thought I was good 'till PP&L turned on the juice to the town.. They did and I turned my mains back on--MISTAKE!!! The ground wire of the service had broken when the 2 poles broke in half. Poof went a whole bunch of stuff whether it was on or off, hooked to surge protectors or not. Seemed to not make any difference. Only things not hurt wrer appliances plugged into ground fault receptacles. I'm going to replace all receptacles sith ground fault. Cooked my desktop, not my monitor, think my scanner is OK. burned 2 portable phones hooked up in that room and another in another room. Got my answering machine and fax machine. Printer and Makita battery charger were hooked up sided by side to voltage regulator, printer seems fine cooked battery chargerf. Both were off??

So my suggestion is put in ground fault receptacles or when you up-grade the house wiring get a ground fault breaker box. Apparently surge protectors, or the ones I was using don't have it built-in. Also per the list a couple years ago or the COL list I didn't have any of them piggy backed. Right now I'm using a Compaq laptop, Armada 1700 and it won't take Linux. Caldera e2,4 or RH7.3. Using M$ ticks me off. I used to get "YOU have performed an illegal operation". They wouldn't even 'fess up to it. That's when I found COL 1.3. Sure miss the old e2.4.

Any of you out and up this way give us some head start and we'll sure try to put you up. It's beautiful country.

Again, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you.
Bob
