The only problem I have had is not with cups directly, but with ghostscript
and PDF (which cups uses to print). Seems the Linux Acrobat is happy to
produce PS that ghostscript does not like. Most likely from the original PDF
doc. Such errors result in all going to the great void without a complaint
or anything. I only sorted it out by printing to a file and checking if I
could view it is gv. At that point, all became obvious.

So, what is your problem with cups?
