I'd recommend the $25 2.7. It's full 2.7, but reduced since 2.8 is due 
out very soon. They are in beta2 now, with beta3 on the way. Version 2.0 
is good, and free, just old so you don't see all the latest stuff. Yes, 
you can apt-get dist-upgrade to new stuff in any brance, woody, testing 
or unstable. I've been running 2.7 with selected unstable updates.

Libranet takes Woody (very stable) and dresses it up with late model 
apps. while maintaining the stability. kde3.1, gnome 2.2, latest 
versions of mozilla/galeon, etc.

 2.8 beta2 is impressive. The new install is excellent.
