I will study all of this.  I've been looking at the GUI hack and am 
glad it still applies.  It sounds like I need to treat kde3 (and qt3) 
like the hack for kde2.  In other words, make an executable called kde3 
that is an as-you-described modified start script that sets environment 
variables and the other start-up stuff?
Jeeze, I just know I'm gonna blow this up.
