If it helps, I have been building KDE 3 from cvs on a Caldera EW3.1 box for
since the end of last year and until about 6 weeks ago was able to have just
one user swapping between kde2 & 3 at login. But the changes they have added
in going towards 3.1 seem to have broken that approach and I've now got 2
users, one for kde2 and one for kde3.-almost-1. With just one user, and
keeping the user's config files separate in ~/.kde2 and ~/.kde3 that just
leaves ~/.kderc and possibly the Desktop directory as being common between
the 2 versions of kde.

You will need to update or add quite a few things to be able to compile 3.0.4
properly. http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-3.0.4.html seems to cover
most of them, and keeping an eye on the output of ./configure should tell you
if anything is missing.

BTW, the infamous 'GUI Login Hack' SxS
(http://linux-sxs.org/kde2loginhack.html) applies to EW3.1 and LTP as well as
ED2.4 and makes it easy to add kde3 to the GUI login dialog options.

'fraid not, I'm still working on the wiggly and tiggly ones ;-)

Enjoy
