Or just make the new executable call /opt/kde3/startkde when it has set
everything up...
#!/bin/sh
# KDE 3 STARTUP SCRIPT (EW3.1)
# Save as /usr/X11R6/bin/kde3 and make executable
QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3
KDEDIR=/opt/kde3
KDEDIRS=/opt/kde3
KDEHOME=$HOME/.kde3
PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$KDEDIR/lib
export QTDIR KDEDIR KDEDIRS PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH KDEHOME
/opt/kde3/bin/startkde
