maxtor drive issue

it's an asus p4b533, and according to alan cox there's a bios problem 
with the ide controller. i do not know; at this point i pretty much 
do not care. installing linux via long distance telephone is bad 
enough; trying to troubleshoot hardware that way, with someone who 
does not know hardware or really much care is just awful. she should 
have gotten one of the walmart boxen with the mandrake preload. but 
they do not have those in their stores.
