Sorry, I can't follow you.
Fedora Core 3
openoffice.org-1.1.2-11.5.fc3

When I enter the 'Save as' dialog, I get to my home directory, have an 
'up one level' icon, a 'create new directory' icon, and, of course, can 
browse the subdirectories of my home directory and save there anything I 
like.
