Certainly not the case for me, but I'm using kde-redhat's OpenOffice.org. The 
default location is my ~/Documents directory, as specified under 
Tools-Options-Paths.

$ rpm -q openoffice.org
openoffice.org-1.1.2-7.0.2.kde
