I agree. Make it $-0-.
We can afford it.

JC, Ann, Michael and I were all discussing this in person last night, and at least for this event, our new proposal is to make this event free as a thank you to our players. The game should cost us less than $500 between sanction fees and facility/director fees and essentially agree that charging mentors would be a disincentive. We've also taken in membership fees for the last 2 years, and clearly haven't had as many events as a normal year.

I don't know if I am a typical mentor for this, but while I would be perfectly happy to show up and play with someone who was learning, I wouldn't be particularly excited to pay money to do so, and probably wouldn't do so.

Thanks for putting this together! It all looks good to me.
Regarding what to charge, I'm fine with your idea of free for 0-20MPs and $7 per player for everyone else. We should also make note in the publicity that the unit is subsidizing the cost of the event so that there's no confusion given what normal player fees are. (We don't want to unintentionally give folks the impression that live bridge can be that cheap without a subsidy while clubs are trying to get back on their feet.)
Do we want to collect the fee at sign-up or at the door? (We could do either. I prefer that we pick one or the other and not both.)
Thanks,
JC

Hi Unit Board
Scott and I met, per your instructions, to hammer out the details for an upcoming Unit-sponsored f2f Mentor/Mentee game. Here is our proposal, for your consideration:
Mentor/Mentee Game!
Date: Sunday August 29
Location: Seattle Bridge Center
Director: Nick Tipton
Length of game: 18 boards
Start Time: 11:00 doors open, players meet, talk card and eat snacks provided by the Unit
Game time: noon to about 3:00 (hopefully done about 2:30, and then time to discuss hands)
Publicity: There will be a form to register posed on the Unit website. We will also include this in blasts to the membership and in an article in the SUN.
“Conditions of pairs: We are going to use the same format to pair individuals randomly.
-Each pairing should include one NLM.
- Players that were partners for the last Mentor/Mentee game and both want to be paired up again can be.
- Any other pairs can sign up as a pair if they choose, but one of them must be an NLM.
- Everyone else can sign up as individuals and they will either be a mentor or mentee based on balancing both sides like we did last time.
Basically, pairs can register in advance or come as singles and will be paired up by the organizers (Scott and Ann). Registration form will be posted at the Unit website.
Now, let’s talk money.
Cost of the game for players: We can charge anywhere from ‘free’ to say, $10/per player. This is not a money-making event, but is being offered to help promote bridge to junior players and get folk who normally don’t play outside of their ‘group’ to meet others. There are a lot of A players who don’t know any of the C players…
We propose that those with under 20 MPs play for free, all others pay a set amount (say $7.00). We are open to board ideas as well.
Budget:
* Nick as DIC: $100.00
* Rental of SBC: $100.00
* Hospitality: $75.00
Nick would like to direct and has set the price of $100 for directing and $100 for the rental of the space. Scott and I recommend we engage Nick’s services and space.
I think this will be a fun event! Let us know your thoughts/comments/ideas.
Ann and Scott
