[SBU Board] Fwd: Larry Cohen Bridge Event

I share Monty’s concern.
Gay Parrish and I explored the possibility of putting together a Larry Cohen event in conjunction with the Lynnwood Regional a couple of years ago. The effort foundered, primarily for financial reasons. As I recall, Larry insisted upon a guarantee of $10,000 or perhaps more from the sponsoring organization. I don’t know whether he also requires that the organization cover his lodging, and/or meals, travel, and other costs.
His presentations are indeed wonderful. I think he typically presents them on high-end cruises, and at country clubs – not in local bridge clubs. The materials are designed for intermediate players.
If we have significant interest in pursuing this, I suggest we contact the members of his staff about the terms under which he might do a program in Seattle. It would also be interesting to learn what his arrangements are for the Vancouver event, if Tim would be comfortable asking his friend who is running it.

I agree. I don’t know what Cohen charges for his presentations, but I imagine that it’s substantial, and that signing on to this would involve significant risk. It would be useful to know what attendance would be necessary in order to break even. That might limit the number of venues that are possible.

I think the best way might be to forward to ESBC and SBC and let the clubs get a piece of this? thoughts?

U446 Board,
Please find below an email and flyer from Carroll Guichon (an acquaintance from Vancouver U430) who is facilitating a program by Larry Cohen in the Vancouver area next June. She indicates Larry would also like to do a program in Seattle, presumably in conjunction with the one in BC (he lives in Florida). You might consider the possibility of such a program for U446 I/N players. I told Carroll I would forward her note & flyer to you.
Joel Fuhrmann, Jenny Ballantyne, Tony Marshall, the Hellers, Renae and I experienced Larry’s program as part of a Panama Canal cruise a couple years ago. John and Sherry Weinberg have done Larry’s program multiple times. He is outstanding —informative and entertaining, with a great touch. His format of a lecture (interactive) followed by four pre-arranged hands is an excellent learning experience for players of all levels.
Tim

Hi Tim and Renee
You have probably heard that Larry is coming here next June 12 & 13, 2020. We are now almost 85% full!! Just wondering if you still want to come for this?? I have saved you 2 spots so just let me know. I know Larry would like to go to Seattle also but I don't believe anything has happened in this regard. Hope all is well with you both. Will attach our flyer. Please spread the word!! Thanks so much. Carroll.
