[SBU Board] Travel Scholarship to Unique Jordan

Good morning, all.

You will recall that the Board allocated up to $750 to cover travel expenses to Toronto for kids participating in the SeattleNextGenBridge program in the Seattle Schools.
Ann Romeo and I, who are teaching in that program, were charged with reviewing all applications for those funds, primarily to verify financial need.

There was just one applicant: Unique Jordan.
Unique just finished seventh grade at Washington Middle School.
He has participated in our bridge program there for two years.
This year, Unique and his partner won the end-of-school bridge tournament for all participants from all schools.
You can see their pictures on page 2 of the June/July issue of the SUN.

Anne Farmer strongly supports Unique's application.
She tells us that Unique has overcome many challenges, ranging from economic to learning and others.

Ann Romeo and I briefly met Unique and his family at the tournament.
Unique submitted a letter applying for the travel support money; I will forward that separately to you.
When he applied for our travel scholarship, Ann talked at length with Unique's mother.
We were fully satisfied as to his family's financial need.
While he has raised funds from other sources, including SeattleNextGenBridge, those funds will go primarily for air fare and the cost of obtaining a passport.
He needs our funds to pay for his hotel room; without them, he would not be able to make the trip.

Ann Romeo reports that depression is one of the challenges Unique has faced; and that bridge is one of the things saving him.

We have therefore sent to Unique our check for $750, along with the letter attached to this message.
