<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">You will recall that the Board allocated up to $750 to cover travel expenses to Toronto for kids participating in the SeattleNextGenBridge program in the Seattle Schools.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Ann Romeo and I, who are teaching in that program, were charged with reviewing all applications for those funds, primarily to verify financial need.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">There was just one applicant: Unique Jordan.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Unique just finished seventh grade at Washington Middle School.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">He has participated in our bridge program there for two years.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">This year, Unique and his partner won the end-of-school bridge tournament for all participants from all schools.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">You can see their pictures on page 2 of the June/July issue of the SUN.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Anne Farmer strongly supports Unique’s application.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">She tells us that Unique has overcome many challenges, ranging from economic to learning and others.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Ann Romeo and I briefly met Unique and his family at the tournament.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Unique submitted a letter applying for the travel support money; I will forward that separately to you.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">When he applied for our travel scholarship, Ann talked at length with Unique’s mother.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">We were fully satisfied as to his family’s financial need.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">While he has raised funds from other sources, including SeattleNextGenBridge, those funds will go primarily for air fare and the cost of obtaining a passport.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">He needs our funds to pay for his hotel room; without them, he would not be able to make the trip.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Ann Romeo reports that depression is one of the challenges Unique has faced; and that bridge is one of the things saving him.
