distro optimization question

Are you wanting to just host drupal or develop for drupal on this machine?

If you want to host it, I'd forget a desktop environment and run the
latest version of Ubuntu server. Set up the http server and such from
the cli.

I run a 3 year old version of Ubuntu with XFCE on a 200Mhz Pentium II
with 512M of memory. It runs tolerably well. Wouldn't want it as my main
development station, but a 900Mhz Athlon with 1.5G would scream compared
to it.
