How to fix screen resolution?

What kind of card do you have? They seemed to have screwed up the nvidia
usage by using some of their own code.
I had fits with several machines on 11.10 (and also 11.04) until I loaded up
the nvidia proprietary drivers. Strongly recommended. Solved a lot of
problems for me.
