Firefox/Iceweasel now a PITA/POS

Folks,

What web browsers is everyone using?  I ask this because
Firefox/Iceweasel 3.x has become such a major POS I'm looking at
ripping it out.

Situations:
Home:  several systems (OK 5 computers, one per) with 4 having /home
NFS mounted.  Finally had to create a /var/home/$USER directory and
move then link from the primary home to stop getting the "Firefox is
already running ... close FF or reboot" nonsense.  Still running into
the occasional screams of "I don't have Internet" (meaning FF won't
open, often not even giving the FF is running dialog, just flat not
running which usually means cleaning out /tmp).

School:  here all systems are dumb terminals running off the server.
All is well for the older students that have their own logins, but the
Kinder through 2d grade that use the same guest account (although
guest is pointed to /var/home/guest which is on a separate RAMdisk
filesystem in the dumb terminals) get the "FF is running ... " crap
for all but the first guest.

This is the _ONLY_ program giving me migranes and I just need FF to go
away (and take my migranes with it).

Suggestions?
