For lack of anything else to report, I installed SuSE 11.2 64-bit on a 
Core 2 duo 2.2 gHz system I built a couple of years ago.
I then installed old Word Perfect 8.1 and it works.
(WP 8.1 is the Deb package version that was bundled with Corel Linux.  I 
converted the packages to TAR for installing in SuSE)

If anyone is interested I'll post the how-to here.
