Another $.02 or less.
I haven't bothered with Ubuntu in 2 1/2 years, but my real live Debian
system updates weekly (or biweekly) with nary a problem. The only
thing that could remotely be styled a problem is the latest KDE. Since
I don't do much with KDE other than run a browser and terminal
sessions and Open Office, I'm pretty much immune to the desktop wars.
I could get equally good results with XFCE or ??? desktop.
I did take the plunge and reinstall 64-bit about 6 months ago. With
the excellent support of the Debian multimedia repository and a 64-bit
flash (finally), everything I need is working top-notch. Even
Iceweasel (the Firefox fork) is working for once, so I haven't needed
to download the real thing as I did in the past.
Most of our local Linux enthusiasts are died-in-the-wool Ubuntu heads
at this point. Next Tuesday our regular monthly meeting is the big
local Ubuntu release party. I do keep track of Ubuntu. It is pretty
much a shoo-in for totally clueless newbies.
