installing postgresql on Vector Linux (Slackware)

I just installed Vector Linux 6 (Standard edition) on a Dell Inspiron 8100.
The only application that I've found so far that doesn't work (that I use on
a regular basis) is PostgreSQL. There is a package on their gslapt
repository; but I can't get the server to start. I think it's a special
packaging of PostgreSQL for Glom, since Glom seems to be able to use it.
Are any of you using PostgreSQL on Slackware or Vector Linux? Do you have
any advice for installing PostgreSQL?
I've compiled PostgreSQL before (8 years ago); but I'd rather use a method
that's easy to uninstall later for upgrades.
Thanks,
Andrew
