I run XFCE4 on all my desktops and laptops....

Running Kubuntu Netbook on an eeePC but then switching to XFCE4

If you do the 'Add to Panel' thing, there is: 

Battery Monitor     tells me the battery level  (100%) and that I am currently 
running on A/C power.

There are probably other goodies too, but the monitor does all I need.
