We use the x-keys strip. Fits nicely above the keyboard function keys.
We access it via our own software. It shows up as a USB device on Linux.
We have a udev rule to make a nice sym link to it so it is easy to find.
No additional software is needed. However, if you want the key itself to
send something specific, and not use the X facility to do this, then
there is Windows-only software.
