Brother Printer

I just got a Brother HL-5250DN laser printer.
It understands postscript, and, so without any fuss,
I just send my print jobs (in postscript) to the printer
(parallel port). No problem.
However, I would like to be able to access some of the
more advanced features of this printer, like accommodating
thick envelopes or using less toner ink.
Is there a way to communicate with the printer to access
these features by just sending some control characters
to the printer before you send your print job? If so,
where might those commands be found?
I really don't feel like going through the work of
installing linux drivers and all when everything is really
working just fine.
