Ken,

My first thoughts would be to "round up the usual suspects." Since it's a new 
install with an existing home directory, did you create your new user & group 
id's to match those previously existing (not just the names but the 
underlying id numbers.)? Have you tried deleting the local/home configuration 
files and forced the app's to create new ones from scratch?
