Yes, you can run linux on it but in all honesty it's not going to be pretty. I 
have Debian stable on a old Dell that has 32mb ram that once served as a 
gateway, but I didn't run X on it. I don't know if you can even run something 
like Icewm anymore on 32mb but you can always give it a shot.

You didn't say if you could boot from a cd or not, but if you can't  Debian 
still offers boot floppies.
