I have built my PC's for twenty years now. During this time I bought
most of my motherboards from JDR Computer products and never had one
fail; I have two old JDR PC AT systems that still work. The only
catastrophic motherboard failures were one (not from JDR) that lost its
parallel port and an Intel 850 that apparently blew a capacitor. I
recently got around to building a Core 2 Duo system using an MSI mobo I
bought from JDR. (Note, although Lonni will probably erupt, all of my
JDR boards have VIA chipsets.)
I am picky about power supplies; I prefer PC Power & Cooling units,
although I also have a couple of boxes with upper grade Antec PS's. (My
first PC, a Kaypro, has an early PC Power & Cooling "Silencer"; it still
works.)
Pick a solid case with enough room inside to install auxiliary fans, and
make sure you route your ribbon cables out of the air flow.
I bought 2 used Matrox AGP cards from Amazon for some of my older
systems, and a new Matrox PCI-e for the new system. I've had it with
ATI and Nvidia.
I've had good service from Plextor CD-RW's and DVD-RW's. Get a Logitech
optical mouse too.
