xfstt killing Xserver

I have been fooling around with adding true type fonts
to my system.  I run xfstt. In fact, two versions of the
daemon start up. I didn't think that was possible. All
seemed to go well until I tried starting gv, with a blank
document. Then, the X server just crashes. The only cure
is to comment out the line:

 FontPath        "unix/:7101"

in my XF86Config-4 file.

Other things, like gimp, work fine, with the true type fonts. 

Any ideas appreciated.
