I used Crossover a long time back. It works great for the major
applications they support, but miscellaneous apps that my wife wanted
to use would not run.

As regards VMWare

1. It's great, too
2. You really need 2G memory for best results
3. It's best to run the Linux VMWare offerings.
4. If you have MS installation media, it's easy to create a VM and
install Windows.
5. If not, you need the VMWare converter (don't remember the name) to
create a VMF to run your existing Windows. We're using one of these
with VMPlayer at work for new Linux workstations who need MS Mail,
etc.
6. Vmplayer is not perfect. We get a lot of BSODs on the virtual
Windows machines (none with the same image native).
7. If you have the bucks, VMServer is a better choice.
