Unless you already have the T-carrier equipment lying around, I'd use a 
pair of VDSL modems instead. Very fast and good for thousands of feet 
and very tolerant of wire quality variances. About $200US for a pair.

For a distance of only 500' these would be considerably faster than T-1.
