I use APC  backups and use   the  apcupsd  program for monitoring and shutdown 
when the power fails.

But you must make sure you get an APC backup that will send the proper data.  
I have two small units that do (connected by USB)  and one large one that 
doesn't (connected by a serial cable I had to build)
