Gnome screen frozen

1. I didn't start gdm. I was using startx. I disabled the gdm shortcut.

2. ctrl+alt+backspace didn't response. already tried yesterday.

I don't need to restart the ubuntu, but... not good having all virtual 
console inaccessible.
