Debian Etch vs Ubuntu kernels

Perhaps the simplest thing to do, to avoid having to edit your sources.list 
file and the headaches of trying to maintain a mixed system, is just to go 
out to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages and find the 
appropriate kernel package for your system. The package name is going to be 
something on the order of linux-image-2.6-... 

Once you've found the correct page you can then download the deb file directly 
and install it with `dpkg -i linux-image-2.6-...`

Alternatively you could download the appropriate unstable source file 
(linux-source-2.6-...) and make a new, custom kernel with make-kpkg.

The only drawback to this method is that you will not upgrade automatically as 
new kernel packages are released.
