Exactly the path I started down.  I tried again from source and this
time it did not complain about the lib. Of course, the new attempt was
on Suse 10.2, while the failed one was on 10.0

Anyway, IMHO, it is not worth the effort. Maybe SciTE will evolve into a
useful editor. 'tain't there yet.
