Mount error

I am trying to create a new filesystem in Linux, but instead of doing it
through yast, I did it manually this time.

I used fdisk, to create a new partition (/dev/sdb1).  I then used
mkfs.ext3, to create a filesystem on it, and then added the device to
the /etc/fstab file.

When I try to mount the filesystem, I get the error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
       or too many mounted file systems


What am I doing wrong here ?
