There is a world of difference between and analog audio tape and a
compressed digital tape.  Dropped bits and noise in the audio get
filtered by your brain, computers ain't smart enough to compensate for
that stuff in compressed digital.

IMNSHO, tapes are a miserable way to do backups, and have been for
almost a decade.
