Intraoffice messaging via Jabber

Thanks, David. It appears pidgin is a perfectly fine candidate for a 
client but I don't see anything among the available plugins that does 
what I think I'm describing.

Do you have any more details you could share (or any idea where I should 
look for the plugin)?
