That's primarily the way I've been testing. Open a console session, switch to
a virtual terminal, etc. and type `echo -e '\a\a\a'`. All I get is a blank
line and silence.
Also, the first thing I checked was mixer settings with alsamixer, and the
volume settings are up because I can hear the usual system notification
sounds from KDE.
