I think James may be right. I just ran a quick check with my system and as 
soon as I "deleted" a couple of files on a flash memory card, KDE 
automagically created a .trash folder and moved the files into it. The file 
system was ext2, and not FAT.

There's a setting buried somewhere within the KDE user configuration which 
specifies whether a true "delete" is wanted or whether the user wishes only a 
move to trash. I've always used delete, previously, but when I installed this 
system I never got around to setting the flag and have just been using move 
to trash. I never realized before this thread brought it up, that KDE creates 
a .trash folder in each separate file system, rather than using just the one 
in my home directory.
