I don't know what flavor of Linux you're running, but I think the
critical settings aren't the video card, but the monitor settings.

I'm most familiar with SuSE's ``sax2'' setup program which allows
one to specify monitor by manufacturer and model number.  It also
has a place to enter the monitor's dimensions in millimeters.  If
the monitor isn't available in their database, one can enter the
horizontal and vertical parameters manually.

I've just started working with CentOS which has a similar
program, system-config-display which has similar selections, but
I haven't found where it might allow things like the horizontal
and vertical specs or monitor dimensions.  The one on CentOS 4.5
gave me more options for resolutions and figured out the Dell
monitor model automatically while the one on CentOS 5.0 didn't
