HylaFAX has lots of documentation on-line and in the sources.

I messed with mgetty and Hylafax quite a bit on a SuSE 9.0 Pro
system before I figured out the proper GettyArgs to use the
/sbin/getty program with Hylafax's faxgetty program. I never did
get the mgetty to work with dialin data connections on the same
modem as fax.
I'm using the GettyArgs string "-D 511 -h %l dx_%s vt100" on the
system now supporting dialin uucp on the same modem that's being
used for incoming and outgoing faxes.
