This week's Inforworld has several articles on open source, and one
discusses multimedia applications. The major problem with the multimedia
apps on Linux and other open source platforms is that so many of the
formats and protocols are proprietary without open source versions. Added
to this is the so-called DRM (Digital Rights Management) software and
``laws'' that special interests such as RIAA have managed to get passed by
various legislatures.
